What are varicose veins?

Varicose veins are a common problem that affects many people. Varicose veins are swollen, twisted veins that can be seen just below the skin’s surface. They often look like cords and can be blue, purple, or red in color. They are caused by a weakening of the vein walls, which can lead to blood pooling and inflammation.

Varicose veins can cause pain and discomfort, and can also lead to other health problems if left untreated. Symptomatic varicose veins in your legs could present as burning, throbbing, swelling, muscle cramps, itching, skin discoloration, aching, heavy sensation, and worsening pain down your legs from prolonged standing or sitting.

Do I have varicose veins?

The symptoms of varicose veins can vary depending on the individual. Some people may experience pain, swelling, or cramping in the legs. Others may notice a brownish discoloration in the skin, or that their veins are bulging or twisted. Varicose veins may also cause skin ulcers or sores. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it is important to see a doctor or medical professional for an evaluation.

Vein FAQ

There are many different treatment options available for varicose veins. Treatment options vary depending on the individual’s symptoms and the severity of the veins. Some treatment options include:

  • Elevation: This involves elevating the legs above the level of the heart to help reduce swelling. Elevation works well for treating mild to moderate varicose veins.
  • Compression stockings: These are special stockings that help to improve blood circulation and reduce swelling. They work by squeezing the veins to prevent the blood from pooling.
  • Sclerotherapy: This is a medical procedure that involves injecting a solution into the veins. The solution causes the veins to scar and close, which helps to improve blood flow.
  • Thermal Ablation: This is a minimally invasive procedure that uses heat to destroy the veins. The heat is applied through a small catheter inserted into the varicose vein, and works to damage the vein walls.
  • Vein ligation and stripping: This is a surgical procedure that involves tying off the veins and then removing them through small incisions in the skin. This procedure is usually only recommended for severe varicose veins.

The results of treatment for varicose veins can vary depending on the individual. In some cases, the veins may disappear completely. In other cases, the veins may become less visible or may not cause any symptoms. Treatment can often help to improve the appearance of the veins and reduce the risk of complications. However, varicose veins may return even after treatment. If you are concerned about varicose veins, call MVM Health: Pain, Vein, & Wellness for an evaluation. There are many different treatment options available, and the best option for you will depend on your individual symptoms and health history. With proper treatment, you can improve the appearance of your veins and reduce the risk of complications.

Spider veins are a similar, but less serious, condition that affects smaller veins. They are often red or blue in color and can look like a spider web or tree branch. Spider veins are caused by the same factors as varicose veins, and can also lead to health problems if left untreated.

Vein Treatment Options at MVM Health

Endovenous Foam Treatment (EVFT)

This minimally-invasive outpatient procedure uses a foam solution to shrink and close varicose veins. The foam is injected into the target veins through a catheter, leaving surrounding tissues unaffected.

VenaCure EVLT™ Laser Treatment

This minimally-invasive outpatient procedure, which takes less than 45 minutes to perform, uses laser light to shrink and close varicose veins. The laser is inserted into the target veins through a catheter, leaving surrounding tissues unaffected.

Micro-foam Sclerotherapy Vein Treatment

This non-invasive, outpatient procedure uses an injectable foam solution to treat spider veins and varicose veins. In some cases, ultrasound may be used to guide the injection.

Laser Treatment for Spider Veins

During this quick and painless procedure, laser light is used to penetrate the skin and reduce or eliminate the appearance of spider veins.

Sclerotherapy Vein Treatment

This non-invasive, outpatient procedure uses a mild chemical solution, called a sclerosant, to treat spider veins and varicose veins. In some cases, ultrasound may be used to guide the injection.
