Neuromodulation Treatments

Neuromodulation is the use of medication or technology to alter pain signaling in the body with the goal of reducing pain, improving function, and positively impacting your overall quality of life. This term often refers to technological devices that are surgically implanted in the body to help with chronic pain problems. Neuromodulation treatments at MVM Health include Wireless Peripheral Nerve Stimulation, Dorsal Root Ganglion Stimulation Therapy, and Spinal Cord Stimulation.

The Wireless Peripheral Nerve Stimulation procedure is designed to relieve pain caused by a damaged peripheral nerve, such as the intercostal, dorsal scapular, and ilioinguinal nerves.  The wireless peripheral nerve stimulator is the smallest implanted stimulator system. Introduced through a needle under X-ray or ultrasound guidance, the implant utilized electrical pulses to disrupt pain signals. The external wearable antenna transmits power wirelessly to the stimulator.

Dorsal root ganglion stimulations use a small device that is implanted under the skin. Small electrical pulses are sent through the device causing pain signals to be disrupted or delayed. This creates either a comfortable tingling sensation in the area of pain or resolves the pain completely.

Spinal cord stimulation is a procedure in which a small device is surgically placed under the skin and sends a mild electric current to your spinal cord. Thin wires carry current from a pulse generator to the nerve fibers of the spinal cord. The pulses then stimulate the nerves in the area where your pain is felt. As a result, pain is then reduced because the electrical pulses disrupt and mask the pain signal from reaching your brain.

Interventional Pain Procedures

Interventional pain management is a method that utilizes pain-blocking techniques to aid in the reduction of pain patients may be experiencing. This will ensure that day-to-day activities become less difficult, and effectively restore the quality of life for patients. Surgery, electrostimulation, nerve blocks, or implantable drug delivery systems may be used as part of the treatment process. Interventional pain management is generally used to treat patients that are continuing to experience pain after other treatment types have failed.

A joint injection is a non-surgical procedure in which a solution of anesthetic is utilized to inject corticosteroid directly into damaged joint tissue. The injection can be applied to any joint, such as the knee, hips, shoulder, or wrist. This can provide you with the relief you need to improve your range of motion and participate in physical therapy exercises that were too difficult for you before.

Nerve blocks are a type of anesthesia that can be used to block pain signals from traveling along certain nerves. This can be done either temporarily or permanently, depending on the type of nerve block used. Nerve blocks are often used as an effective way to provide relief for chronic pain sufferers who have not found relief with other methods, such as medication or physical therapy.

Epidural steroid injections are utilized to deposit steroids and/or other medications in the epidural space of the spine. The epidural space contains nerves, blood vessels, and fat; and surrounds the dura, a sac around the spinal cord. Epidural steroid injections may be given in the cervical, thoracic, lumbar, or sacral regions of the spine.

Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a procedure that utilizes heat to destroy tissue. For pain management, radio waves are sent through a precisely placed needle to heat an area of the nerve which prevents pain signals from being sent back to your brain. RFA is considered for long-term pain conditions, especially of the neck, lower back, or arthritic joints that haven’t been successfully treated with other methods.

Minimally Invasive Procedures

A minimally invasive procedure is a collective variety of techniques doctors may utilize as an alternative to open surgery. Limiting the incision size can greatly reduce the healing time as well as reduce the risk of infection and potential pain.

Radiofrequency Neurotomy (Endoscopic Method) is a procedure in which heat from radio waves is used to treat painful facet joints in your lower back. It eases the pain that isn’t helped by medications or physical therapy.

SI Joint fusion is a surgical procedure in which the damaged or inflamed sacroiliac joint is removed and replaced with a metal implant. This will allow the joint to regain stability as well as alleviate pain.

The Vertiflex Superion interspinous spacer is a minimally invasive device that is implanted to restore the space between vertebrae. The Superion spacer is put in place using a small tube the size of a dime. This outpatient procedure minimizes tissue damage and blood loss, allowing for a faster, more comfortable recovery.

This is a minimally invasive procedure in which excess ligament tissue is removed through a tiny incision. This will not only restore space in the spinal canal, but it will also alleviate pain.

An intrathecal pain pump implant is often utilized to relieve several kinds of chronic pain or cancer pain. Pain medication is sent through a thin, flexible tube that is inserted into the space around the spinal cord. Once the medication reaches the nerves in the spine, pain signals begin to decrease and delay, resulting in pain relief.

Kyphoplasty is a surgical procedure that is used to treat compression fractures of the spine.  This procedure is performed using a balloon catheter to create a cavity in the vertebrae. This space is then filled with a specialized cement, which stabilizes the fracture and restores the height and alignment of the vertebrae. Kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that can be done on an outpatient basis.

Ketamine Infusion Therapy

Ketamine infusion therapy is an innovative and powerful solution to address chronic pain, anxiety, depression, and stress. Ketamine infusion therapy involves IV administration of the medication and works by blocking NMDA receptors in the brain. This action leads to decreased pain and improved mood.
