Varicose Vein

The veins in your body play a crucial role in carrying blood back to your heart. When the valves inside of veins no longer work correctly, varicose veins and spider veins can occur. At MVM Pain, Vein, & Wellness, we are glad to offer a number of solutions for patients looking to treat varicose and spider veins.

What Are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are a common condition in which veins close to the surface of the skin become enlarged and twisted. They are often dark purple or blue in appearance and appear to protrude or bulge out of the skin. It is believed that weak or damaged walls or valves in veins can interrupt healthy blood flow and cause veins to become larger or more distorted, resulting in varicose veins. Though varicose veins can happen anywhere in the body, they are most common in the legs.

  • Changes in skin color in the affected area
  • Swelling
  • Aching pain
  • Itching
  • Burning
  • Throbbing
  • Cramps
  • A feeling of heaviness

People who have varicose veins in their legs may experience worsened pain after long periods of sitting or standing. If you experience any of the uncomfortable or painful symptoms listed above or develop skin ulcers or sores as a result of your varicose veins, it is important to seek a medical professional for an evaluation as soon as possible.

What Are Spider Veins?

Spider veins are a similar, but less serious, condition that affects smaller veins. They are often red or blue in color and can look like a spider web or tree branch. As with varicose veins, spider veins can commonly be found on the legs, but also on the face. When the condition affects the face, these spider veins can be the result of excessive sun exposure without adequate sun protection, aging, excess alcohol consumption, or injury to the face. Spider veins are caused by the same factors as varicose veins, and can also lead to health problems if left untreated.

What Are Factors That Increase Your Risk Of Varicose Veins And Spider Veins?

It is estimated that 20% of all adults will get varicose veins at some point in their lifetime. Though varicose veins and spider veins can happen to both men and women, both of these conditions are more common in women. It is believed that hormonal changes such as menstruation, pregnancy, menopause, or taking oral birth control pills can affect vein walls. In addition to gender, other risk factors for varicose veins and spider veins include:

  • Age. Getting older can cause wear and tear on the valves in veins that help control healthy blood flow.
  • Genetics. It is more likely for someone to have varicose veins if other family members have had the condition as well.
  • Obesity. Excess weight can put added pressure on the veins.

How Are Varicose Veins Treated?

There are many different treatment options available for varicose veins. Treatment options vary depending on the individual’s symptoms and the severity of the veins. Some treatments that people with varicose veins can implement at home include:

  • Elevation: This involves elevating the legs above the level of the heart to help reduce swelling. Elevation works well for treating mild to moderate varicose veins. You may be instructed by your doctor to use a pillow or supportive bed wedge to elevate your feet for 15 minutes, up to three or four times a day.
  • Compression stockings: These are special stockings that help to improve blood circulation and reduce swelling. They work by squeezing the veins to prevent the blood from pooling. Compression socks and stockings can be especially useful for people who have to sit or stand for long periods of time because of their work or lifestyle, and are often worn by passengers traveling by airplane.

There are also several solutions for varicose veins that can be administered by medical professionals when at-home solutions are not satisfactory. These professional treatments include:

  • Sclerotherapy: This is a medical procedure that involves injecting a solution into the veins. The solution causes the veins to scar and close, which helps to improve blood flow.
  • Thermal Ablation: This is a minimally invasive procedure that uses heat to destroy the veins. The heat is applied through a small catheter inserted into the varicose vein and works to damage the vein walls.
  • Vein ligation and stripping: This is a surgical procedure that involves tying off the veins and then removing them through small incisions in the skin. This procedure is usually only recommended for severe varicose veins.

Are Treatments For Varicose Veins Permanent?

The results of treatment for varicose veins can vary depending on the individual. In some cases, the veins may disappear completely. In other cases, the veins may become less visible or may not cause any symptoms. Treatment can often help to improve the appearance of the veins and reduce the risk of complications. However, varicose veins may return even after treatment. If you are concerned about varicose veins, call MVM Health – Pain, Vein, & Wellness for an evaluation. There are many different treatment options available, and the best option for you will depend on your individual symptoms and health history. With proper treatment, you can improve the appearance of your veins and reduce the risk of complications.
