Sclerotherapy
Focused Relief for Pelvic Vein Pain
Spider veins and small varicose veins are common, and for many people they’re more than a cosmetic concern. They can come with aching, burning, itching or heaviness in the legs. Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive spider vein treatment that closes these veins with a small injection, so blood is rerouted through healthier veins and the treated vein gradually fades.
At MVM Health, your provider examines your legs first to confirm sclerotherapy is appropriate, and discusses other options when it isn’t. Book a vein evaluation to find out which approach fits you.
Vein Conditions We Evaluate at Our Clinic
From varicose veins and spider veins to chronic venous insufficiency, our vein specialists diagnose and treat a wide range of vein and circulation conditions.
Varicose Veins
Swollen, twisted veins that can cause pain, heaviness and poor circulation.
Spider Veins
Small, visible veins that appear on the legs or face and affect appearance.
Chronic Venous Insufficiency
A long-term condition where veins have trouble returning blood to the heart.
Leg Pain & Heaviness
Persistent discomfort, tiredness or heaviness in the legs.
Leg Swelling (Edema)
Fluid buildup in the legs, ankles or feet.
Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS)
Relief-focused care for uncomfortable leg sensations and the urge to move.
Noticing changes in your legs that aren’t going away? Request a vein evaluation at MVM Health or call (888) 628-4785.
What is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is a procedure in which a medicine called a sclerosant is injected into a vein. It irritates the vein wall so the vein closes, and over the following weeks the body gradually absorbs it. In the U.S., the sclerosant polidocanol is FDA-approved to treat uncomplicated spider veins and reticular veins in the legs.
Larger varicose veins, or veins linked to venous insufficiency, may need a different treatment, such as radiofrequency ablation, laser ablation, VenaSeal or ClariVein. Sometimes sclerotherapy is combined with one of these. Learn more about spider veins and varicose veins.

How Sclerotherapy Works?
Sclerotherapy is a highly effective vein-closing method that treats faulty veins by putting a safe liquid medicine directly into the vessel. The process involves making a tiny insertion point and using a small needle to insert the sclerosant solution into the unwanted vein. This medicine causes the vein walls to seal shut, cutting down on unwanted blood pooling, and stopping more vein deterioration. The Sclerotherapy process is often guided by Ultrasound imaging to ensure perfect placement of the medicine, reducing the risk of issues and encouraging a quicker return to health.
How Sclerotherapy Can Help You
Evaluation:
your provider examines your legs and reviews your symptoms and history. A duplex ultrasound may be recommended if a deeper vein problem is suspected.
Sclerotherapy injections:
using a very fine needle, your provider injects the sclerosant into the targeted veins. Depending on the vein, it may be a liquid or a foam.
Ultrasound guidance, when needed:
for veins that can’t be seen from the surface, ultrasound may guide the injection.
After treatment:
compression is commonly recommended. For example, labeling for one commonly used sclerosant calls for compression for 2 to 3 days after treating spider veins and 5 to 7 days after reticular veins. Your provider will give you instructions for your own treatment.

What the Evidence Say
In randomized trials, sclerotherapy cleared spider veins more effectively than a saline placebo. The reviewers found no evidence that one sclerosant works better than another, and noted that higher concentrations were more likely to cause side effects . Professional guidelines also cover indications, contraindications, techniques and side effects. This is why your provider chooses the agent, concentration and technique for your veins, rather than using one standard approach.
FAQS
What is sclerotherapy, and what conditions does it treat?
Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive procedure that treats damaged or unwanted veins in the legs and pelvis by injecting a sclerosant solution directly into the affected vessel. It is commonly used to address spider veins, small varicose veins, and veins associated with Venous Insufficiency that cause chronic pelvic or leg pain, heaviness, and discomfort.
How does the sclerotherapy procedure work?
During sclerotherapy, a physician makes a tiny insertion point and uses a small needle to inject a sclerosant solution into the targeted vein. This solution causes the vein walls to seal shut, reducing unwanted blood pooling and stopping further vein deterioration. Ultrasound imaging is typically used to guide precise placement of the medication.
Is sclerotherapy painful, and what is the recovery like?
Sclerotherapy is a low-impact procedure that requires only a tiny insertion point, resulting in minimal discomfort during and after treatment. Most patients can return to their everyday routines within just a few days, making it one of the most convenient options for vein relief.
How long do the results of sclerotherapy last?
Because sclerotherapy permanently closes the targeted faulty veins, the results are long-lasting. Once the treated veins are sealed, they are gradually absorbed by the body and will no longer cause pooling or chronic pain, offering durable relief rather than just temporary symptom management.
Why choose MVM Health for sclerotherapy?
MVM Health’s experienced physician team specializes in the latest vein treatment methods, including Ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy. Every patient receives a thorough evaluation, personalized care plan, and ongoing recovery support in a modern facility equipped with advanced medical technology.
