Signs It May Be Time for a Vein Evaluation
You don’t need visible veins to have a vein-related concern — some of the most common reasons patients schedule a vein evaluation in Philadelphia aren’t about appearance at all.
Legs that feel heavy or tired by the end of the day even without a long day on your feet. This heaviness can build gradually over weeks or months, to the point where it starts to feel normal, even though it wasn’t always this way.
Aching or throbbing, especially after sitting or standing for extended periods. Some patients notice it worsens with certain jobs or routines, while others can’t pinpoint a clear pattern at all both are worth mentioning during an evaluation.
Visible varicose veins raised, twisted, rope-like veins, often in the legs. These can appear gradually or seem to show up all at once, and their size doesn’t always match how much discomfort they’re causing.
Spider veins smaller, web-like clusters closer to the skin’s surface. While often considered a cosmetic concern, they can sometimes accompany other vein-related symptoms worth discussing together.
Swelling that builds throughout the day and improves overnight. This pattern worse by evening, better by morning is a detail your provider will likely ask about specifically, since it can point toward how your veins are functioning.
Restless or crampy legs, particularly at night. These sensations can interrupt sleep and are sometimes dismissed as unrelated, when in fact they can be connected to how well blood is circulating back up from your legs.
If any of this sounds familiar, it’s worth scheduling a vein consultation rather than assuming it’s normal wear and tear; an evaluation is the only way to know what’s actually contributing to your symptoms.
Why Early Evaluation Matters
It’s easy to put off a vein evaluation, especially when symptoms are mild or come and go. But vein-related conditions like chronic venous insufficiency are often described as progressive meaning symptoms can gradually change over time rather than staying the same.
Symptoms don't always resolve on their own
Heaviness, aching, or swelling that’s been present for months isn’t necessarily something that will simply go away with time.
Waiting doesn't always mean things stay the same
For some patients, what starts as mild aching or occasional swelling can become more noticeable or more frequent over time though the pace and pattern vary significantly from person to person.
Early evaluation gives you more information, not more pressure.
Getting evaluated sooner doesn’t commit you to treatment it simply means you and your provider have a clearer picture of what’s going on, so any decision you make later is an informed one.
Some vein-related symptoms can affect daily comfort more than people expect.
Restless legs at night, aching after a full day, or swelling that makes shoes feel tighter by evening can all chip away at day-to-day comfort, even when nothing looks urgent.
None of this means every symptom requires treatment many patients are evaluated and simply monitored over time. But an evaluation is the only way to understand which category your specific situation falls into, rather than guessing.

I'm going to say Dr. O is a miracle worker. I have two herniated discs in my neck and the pain was so severe, I had to roll out of bed some days. I went to see Dr. O and was scheduled for an injection in my neck. The first injection helped a little bit, but I was still in severe pain most days. Speaking to other people, it normally takes two injections so I went from my second injection with Dr. O. Oh, and by the way, he squeezed me in the very next day for the procedure. I have not felt this good in a very long time. I can actually sit in a chair without my neck throbbing from pain and I've even started taking better care of my vegetable garden in my yard. Like I said this man is a miracle worker. Love, love, love him and I highly recommend him. Oh, and all of his staff are extremely friendly, patient, and very empathetic to their patients.Posted on Google![]()

I have been a patient of Dr. Orhurhu for over a year and the care he has given me has been exceptional. I had a compound fracture of my L2 vertebrae in May 2024 and he performed a Kyphoplasty in his office with wonderful results. I still have issues with my back due to scoliosis and bulgeing discs that impinge on my spine. Dr.O suggested ablation therpy on my low back along with 4 epidural injections with 2 more to come this week. But I have great faith in Dr. Orhurhu that I will be improving under his excellent care and guidance.Posted on Google![]()

FAQ
MVM Health’s Philadelphia vein clinic is at 2418 E York St, Suite #5, Philadelphia, PA 19125, in Fishtown. It’s convenient for patients from Port Richmond, East Kensington, Northern Liberties, and Center City. Drivers can use I-95 via the Girard Avenue exit. The office is open Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, and you can reach it at (610) 936-8214.
MVM Health’s Philadelphia team evaluates and treats:
- varicose veins and spider veins
- chronic venous insufficiency
- leg swelling
- heavy or aching legs
- leg cramps and restless legs linked to poor vein function
Many of these symptoms start when valves inside leg veins weaken. Blood then pools instead of flowing back to the heart, a problem called venous reflux.
For varicose veins caused by venous reflux, minimally invasive endovenous procedures are the standard of care. Society for Vascular Surgery and American Venous Forum guidelines generally favor these over traditional vein stripping. MVM Health offers:
- radiofrequency ablation (RFA)
- endovenous laser ablation
- VenaSeal™ medical adhesive closure
- ClariVein®
- ambulatory phlebectomy
The right choice depends on your duplex ultrasound findings and the size and location of the affected vein.
Insurance often covers vein treatment when it is medically necessary. Coverage commonly applies to varicose veins causing pain, swelling, or skin changes, with reflux confirmed on ultrasound. Cosmetic spider vein treatment is usually not covered. Some plans also require a trial of compression stockings or prior authorization first. MVM Health works with Medicare, UnitedHealthcare, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Aetna, Humana, and many other plans, and our team will verify your benefits.
The cost of vein treatment without insurance depends on the procedure, how many veins are treated, and how many sessions you need. Sclerotherapy for spider veins is usually priced per session. Ablation procedures for varicose veins cost more. MVM Health explains expected costs before treatment begins, so you know what to plan for. Call (610) 936-8214 for an estimate after your evaluation.
Yes. Sclerotherapy is a non-surgical, in-office treatment for spider veins (telangiectasias). It involves small injections, needs no incisions, and most people return to normal activity the same day. Spider veins fade gradually over several weeks, and some patients need more than one session. Because spider veins are often treated for cosmetic reasons, insurance usually doesn’t cover them.
Does MVM Health offer payment options for vein procedures? Most patients walk out of the office after endovenous laser ablation and return to light daily activities within a day or two. Your provider will usually recommend:
- walking regularly
- wearing compression stockings
- avoiding strenuous exercise for a short period
Mild bruising, tightness, or tenderness along the treated vein is common and usually eases over one to two weeks. Recovery varies by patient.
Does MVM Health offer payment options for vein procedures?A vein consultation at MVM Health starts with a review of your symptoms, medical history, and any past vein treatment. It’s followed by a physical exam of your legs. Most patients with varicose veins or swelling also need a duplex ultrasound, which shows blood flow and checks for venous reflux. Your provider then explains your options in plain language before you decide anything.

MVM Health’s Philadelphia clinic sees vein patients by appointment, because most visits need an evaluation and often a duplex ultrasound before treatment. To get started, request an appointment online or call (610) 936-8214. If you have sudden leg swelling with pain, warmth, or shortness of breath, call 911, as these can be signs of a blood clot.
